Academic
Calendar Committee
Purpose: To set the academic
calendar for all divisions of the University,
and to discuss specific issues relating
to the calendar. Meetings: 2 or 3 times each
year: once in the fall (usually November) to get a draft calendar
circulated and to begin discussion on any issues that need resolution, and
again in the spring as needed until a consensus is reached among committee
members to present a calendar recommendation to the Chancellor. Representative: Peng (Peter) Ling Chair: Sue Hosack

Assembly Series Committee
Purpose: To help in the selection of Assembly Series Speakers, review
speaker's bios, discuss speaker's merits and make suggestions for
speakers. Two graduate students serve on the committee as well as a number
of undergrads and faculty members. The appointment is one year and
preference is given to those who are familiar with and attend the
lectures. The Assembly Series lectures are normally held at 11 a.m. on
Wednesdays during the regular academic year. Meetings: One meeting each semester - Early February and early October.
The dinner meetings last about two hours and begin at 5 p.m. They are held
in 276 N. Skinker. In addition to the meetings there are frequently
extensive e-mail exchanges discussing new speaker ideas. Representative: Katherine Gale Chair: Kurt Mueller

Commencement Committee
Purpose: To plan the logistics,
scheduling and other events of the annual
commencement ceremonies and to coordinate
activities with other commencement-related
groups, such as the Honorary Degree Committee
and Senior Student Association.
Meetings: Tentative meeting dates
are November 2006, January 2007, April
2007 (only if necessary), May 23, 2008
(wrap-up meeting after Commencement).
Meetings are usually held from 3:30-5:00
p.m. on Wednesday afternoons. Representative: Jonathan Knisley Chair: Jim Burmeister

Committee
on Environmental Quality (CEQ)
Purpose: To serve in an advisory
capacity to the University administration
to promote greater understanding among
members of the University community of
the importance of living, working, learning,
and teaching in an environmentally responsible
manner. The committee will work to create
awareness and to integrate environmental
considerations into the academic and administrative
missions of the University. The committee
will develop policies and programs to
encourage responsible environmental management
in the University community.
Meetings: Once every two weeks. Representative: Erin Robinson Chair: Jonathan Lane
Disabled,
Committee on University Policy and Practice
Affecting the
Purpose: To advise the Coordinator
of Disabled Student Services and the Director
of Facilities Planning and Management
regarding Hilltop Campus policies and
practices affecting the disabled; and
to make recommendations related to grievances
brought by disabled students or other
concerned parties. Representative: Melissa Hensley Chair: Mark Smith

Discrimination and Title IX
Purpose: The purpose of the student Discrimination and Title IX Grievance Committee
is to hear complaints by graduate and undergraduate students pertaining to
discrimination based upon gender, as covered in Title IX. The committee
will also hear complaints by undergraduate students pertaining to
discrimination or discriminatory harassment. Meetings: No meetings unless there is a complaint to hear. When there is a complaint, there may be
several meetings, certainly at a minimum two. Representative: Caroline (Carey) Arthur Chair: Ann Prenatt

Graduate Student Health Advisory Committee
Purpose:
This committee advises Dr. Glass,
the director of Student Health and Counseling
Services on the Hilltop Campus. It selects
its own chair, and sets its own agenda. Representative: Melissa Mosely

Holocaust
Memorial Lecture Committee
Purpose: To make recommendations
concerning a speaker for the University's
annual lecture, inaugurated in 1989
by then-Chancellor William H. Danforth
to commemorate the Holocaust and to address
its broader implications for other instances
of systematic persecution and mass murder.
The lecture is part of the Assembly Series
on Wednesday mornings at 11:00 a.m., a
time when few classes are scheduled so
maximum attendance by students and faculty
is possible.
Meetings: Once a year in the spring
to discuss and rank potential speakers
for upcoming lectures. Representative: Brian Kudowitz Chair: Erin McGlothlin

Jazz at Holmes Committee: Art
Collections and Program Committee
Purpose: To provide oversight and guidance in the administration of the
Jazz at Holmes series, which sponsors free jazz concerts most Thursday
evenings during the academic year, and selectively during the summer.
Committee members solicit co-sponsorship from campus organizations, and
provide recommendations concerning musicians and publicity. Meetings: One meeting a semester, usually in October and April. Representative: Jerome Camal Chair: Steve Ehrlich

Library
Council
Purpose: To advise the Dean
of Library Services about general library
operations, to advise the Dean of library
needs seen by students and faculty and
(when needed) to compile reports on particular
library services, funding or other issues.
(Faculty members are appointed by Faculty
Senate Council.) Meetings: 2-4 times per academic year. Representative: Laura Engle Chair: Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert

Mallinckrodt
Center Advisory Committee
Purpose: To discuss policies
pertaining to Mallinckrodt Center:
hours open, physical changes, space use,
security, etc.
Meetings: Twice a semester, usually

Parking
and Traffic Advisory Committee
Purpose: To advise the Director
of Transportation on traffic, parking
or transportation issues for the Hilltop
Campus, including alternatives, major
policy changes, and fine and ticket issues. Meetings: We try to meet quarterly, although occasionally additional
meetings are required if pressing issues need to be presented to the
committee. However, in addition to the larger group, there is a monthly sub
committee that meets to consider parking ticket appeals submitted to our
office. It is extremely important to have student input in this

Safety
and Security, Committee on
Purpose: The Committee on
Safety and Security is intended to facilitate
communication, coordination, and the distribution
of information dealing with campus safety
and security. The Committee may
serve also as an consultative body or
sounding board for the Washington University
Police Department and other departments
concerned with safety and security issues.
In carrying out its purposes, the Committee
may collect information, ask questions,
call attention to apparent problems, and
make recommendations for addressing safety
and security concerns. Representative: Brook Curtiss Chair: Steve Hoffner

Sports
and Recreation Advisory Committee
Purpose: To advise the Athletic
Director in the formulation of policies
and the setting of priorities with regard
to recreation, intramural athletics and
club sports, intercollegiate athletics,
utilization of facilities, and repair/renovation
of facilities. The committee also
receives and responds to recommendations
and suggestions from members of the University
community.
Meetings: Once during the fall
and twice during the spring semester. Representative: Ross Blankenship Chair: John Schael

The
Washington Gallery of Art: Art
Collections and Program Committee
Purpose: The Art Collections
and Program Committee is an advisory committee
appointed to support the activities of
the Washington University Gallery of Art.
The committee advises the director and
curator of the gallery on two matters:
one, the acquisition and deaccession of
art works by the Gallery of Art on behalf
of Washington University; and two, exhibition
programming and other public events related
to exhibitions. The Chancellor appoints
the committee to represent the general
interests of the university at large and
those parts of the University involved
in the visual arts. The Chancellor
also appoints the chair of the committee,
who convenes the committee when appropriate.
The committee should meet at least once
a year.

Judicial Board
Purpose: The University Judicial
Board hears and decides cases of serious
student misconduct referred to it by the
Judicial Administrator or by individual
School or College academic integrity panels,
and performs other duties as prescribed
by the University Judicial Code (published
in Bearings, the student handbook and
elsewhere). (Faculty members appointed
by Senate Council; Student members appointed
by Student Union and the Graduate Professional
Council.)
Meetings: An annual training of
1 1/2 hours. Representative: Todd Benjamin
